What is Information systems?

Information systems are comprised of several components which include hardware, people, software, processes, and data. Collectively, these components work together to generate information. Therefore, when thinking of Information Systems, individuals should not limit their thinking to just software or information. All the mentioned components should be considered. The end goal of information systems is to provide businesses a competitive advantage.

For example, a database management system is software that is used to collect and manage data. Before the software can be used, someone needs to determine the hardware requirements needed to operate the software. The data in a database has no meaning unless people process it into something meaningful and useful. Lastly, the data will not be collected if there is no process in place indicating who will be collecting the data. Information Systems is a fun field, and we are here to help you explore some of the things it has to offer.
